Baby Hearing Checklist

Parents know that it can be difficult to know if a baby is hearing properly. Use this checklist of typical baby development to monitor your child's hearing abilities. If your child fails to show some of these typical responses, you may want to consider an evaluation.

Birth to 3 Months

  • Startles to loud noises
  • Quiets to a familiar or friendly voice

3 Months to 6 Months

  • Turns eyes towards speaker
  • Enjoys rattles and noise making toys
  • Appears to listen
  • Responds t pleasant tones by cooing

6 Months to 12 Months

  • Turns and looks in direction of sound
  • Responds to his or her name
  • Appears to listen
  • Shows understanding of common items
  • Temporarily inhibits actions in response to "no"

1 Year to 2 Years

  • Likes rhymes and jingles
  • Recognizes body parts
  • Can follow simple directions
  • Points to pictures

2 Years to 3 Years

  • Understands differences in meaning (go-stop, big-little)
  • Follows two-step commands
  • Shows interest in sounds of radio and television
  • Enjoys being read to
  • Answers "what" and "who" questions
